About Rodrigues

Rodrigues is the little sister of Mauritius — located 650 kilometers east in the Indian Ocean and as untouched as Mauritius must have been 50 years ago. Only 42,000 inhabitants live on the 109 km² small island, which is surrounded by a huge lagoon that is twice the size of the island itself. The lagoon of Rodrigues is a paradise for kitesurfers, kayakers, and snorkelers: shallow, turquoise water over sandbanks that emerge from the sea at low tide, forming surreal sand islands. Ile aux Cocos is a bird sanctuary with thousands of seabirds — accessible only by boat through the shimmering lagoon. Port Mathurin, the tiny capital, has the charm of a postcard colonial town: colorful markets on Saturdays, Creole cuisine, and an atmosphere where everyone knows everyone. The Caverne Patate — a spectacular limestone cave — showcases stalagmites and stalactites in an underground world full of legends. Rodrigues is famous for its Creole cuisine, considered the best in the Indian Ocean: fresh seafood, marinated octopus, honey from endemic flowers, and the legendary Rodrigues lemon juice. The island lives at its own pace — there is no hustle and bustle, no resorts, no shopping malls.
