About Monastir

Monastir is a historic coastal city on Tunisia's Sahel coast, known primarily as the birthplace of the founding father Habib Bourguiba, but also features an impressive ribat, beautiful beaches, and a relaxed atmosphere. The city is located on a peninsula that juts out into the Mediterranean Sea, combining ancient history with modern beach resort charm in a small space. The Ribat of Monastir is one of the oldest and best-preserved Islamic fortifications in North Africa, built in 796 AD as part of a chain of coastal defenses against attacks from the sea. The massive fortress with its round towers and the tall watchtower (Nador) also served as a film set for Franco Zeffirelli's "Jesus of Nazareth" and Monty Python's "Life of Brian." From the Nador tower, there is a magnificent view over the old harbor, the fishing boats, and the Bourguiba mausoleum with its golden domes. The Bourguiba mausoleum is an impressive structure made of white marble with two slender minarets and a gold-adorned dome, where the father of Tunisian independence is buried. The site is freely accessible and impresses with its spaciousness and elegance. In the compact medina, which is smaller and more relaxed than those of Sousse or Tunis, one can stroll through artisan streets and linger in quiet courtyard cafés without stress. Monastir has its own international airport, making travel particularly easy for German package holidaymakers. The beaches south of the city and on the offshore island of Skanès offer fine sand and calm waters, ideal for families with children. The city is smaller and quieter than Sousse and is perfect for travelers seeking relaxation and culture in a laid-back setting.
