About Nessebar

Nessebar is one of the oldest cities in Europe and an architectural wonder on a narrow peninsula connected to the mainland by a narrow causeway. The UNESCO-protected old town juts out into the Black Sea like a stone ship and unites over 3,000 years of history in a compact space: Thracian fortress walls, Greek temples, Byzantine churches, and Ottoman wooden houses form an open-air museum that is unparalleled in Europe. The density of medieval churches in Nessebar is breathtaking: On the tiny peninsula, barely 850 meters long, there are over 40 churches and chapels from the 5th to the 17th century, many of which feature intricate frescoes and ceramic decorations. The Church of Christ Pantocrator from the 13th century, with its green-red ceramic bands, is the city's landmark and one of the most photographed buildings in Bulgaria. The Old Metropolitan Church from the 5th century is among the oldest preserved church ruins on the Black Sea coast. The cobbled streets of the old town are lined with traditional wooden houses with overhanging upper floors, typical of Black Sea architecture from the 18th and 19th centuries. Ground floors made of stone and upper floors made of wood - this construction method protected against moisture while providing more living space. Many of these houses now host restaurants, galleries, and small hotels that combine authentic charm with modern comfort. Nessebar's location on the peninsula offers sea views from all sides. The promenade encircles the entire old town and provides new perspectives on the sea, fortress walls, and church domes with every step. At the harbor, fishing boats sway alongside excursion boats, and the restaurants serve freshly caught fish with a view of the waves. From Germany, it takes 2.5 hours to fly to Burgas, and Nessebar can be reached in 30 minutes. Sunny Beach is just three kilometers to the north, making Nessebar an ideal day trip - or vice versa: Those who stay overnight in Nessebar can enjoy the empty old town in the evening when the day visitors have departed.
