About Comino
Comino is the smallest of the three inhabited Maltese islands — only 3.5 square kilometers in size, almost uninhabited, and home to the legendary Blue Lagoon, whose color intensity leaves even experienced Mediterranean travelers speechless. The water shimmers in such a bright turquoise over the white sandy bottom that it seems unreal. Between Comino and the tiny island of Cominotto lies the Blue Lagoon — a natural sea lagoon formed by the shallow sandy passage between the islands. In summer, dozens of excursion boats anchor here, but those who come early in the morning or in the off-season experience the lagoon almost alone: crystal-clear water where every stone on the bottom is visible. The rest of the island is a quiet natural paradise: no cars, no roads, only hiking trails through the Mediterranean maquis to abandoned watchtowers from the Knights of St. John. The Santa Marija Tower from the 17th century overlooks the island and offers panoramic views of Malta and Gozo. Santa Marija Bay on the opposite side is quieter than the Blue Lagoon and an excellent snorkeling spot. Comino has only one hotel and a handful of residents. During the day, excursion boats arrive, and in the evening, silence returns — those who stay overnight have the island almost to themselves and experience sunsets over the Mediterranean in absolute solitude.
