About León

León is the largest city in the state of Guanajuato in central highland Mexico and is known as the Leather Capital of the World (Capital Mundial del Calzado). The city produces over a third of all Mexican shoes and is an international center for leather processing, fashion, and design. The Zona Piel (Leather District) and the Mercado de Zapatos offer thousands of shoe stores and leather workshops: from handcrafted cowboy boots to designer shoes, you can find quality at a fraction of European prices. The annual SAPICA shoe fair is the largest in Latin America. The Catedral Basilica de León is an impressive example of neoclassical and baroque architecture: its 66-meter-high dome dominates the skyline. The historic center around the Plaza de los Fundadores and the Arco de la Calzada features colonial buildings, pedestrian zones, and lively plazas. The Parque Metropolitano de León is one of the largest urban parks in Mexico, with lakes, jogging paths, and a safari park. The nearby Cristo Rey statue on the Cerro del Cubilete is considered the geographical center of Mexico and is an important pilgrimage site with panoramic views over the Bajio Valley.
