The Best Restaurants & Eateries

Budapest has a burgeoning restaurant scene — from traditional taverns (Vendéglő) to modern bistros to Michelin-starred restaurants. The best places are often hidden in side streets and courtyards.

Traditional & Authentic (2,000–6,000 HUF / €5–15 per main course)

  • Kiskakukk Étterem: Since 1913 — one of Budapest's oldest restaurants. Goulash, paprikás, pörkölt, and pastries like grandma used to make. Pozsonyi út 12.
  • Két Szerecsen: Bistro in the Jewish Quarter — Hungarian classics with a modern twist. Weekend brunch is legendary. Nagymező utca 14.
  • Rosenstein Étterem: Jewish-Hungarian cuisine near Keleti Station — foie gras, stuffed peppers, cholent. Family-run and excellent. Mosonyi utca 3.
  • Kéhli Vendéglő: In Óbuda — the favorite restaurant of writer Gyula Krúdy. Csülök (pork knuckle), goulash, and gypsy music. Authentically down to the bone. Mókus utca 22.

Modern & Fine Dining (6,000–20,000 HUF / €15–50)

  • Borkonyha Winekitchen: 1 Michelin star — modern Hungarian cuisine with excellent wine pairing. The best value for money among starred restaurants. Reservation needed. Sas utca 3.
  • Costes: Budapest's first Michelin-starred restaurant (2010) — avant-garde cuisine in an elegant setting. Ráday utca 4.
  • Stand25: In the Hold utca Market Hall — modern Hungarian cuisine by Széchenyi Prize winner Tamás Széll. Excellent and surprisingly affordable.
