Sauna Culture — Finland's Sanctuary

The word Sauna is one of the few Finnish words adopted by all languages of the world — and for good reason. Finland has 3.3 million saunas for 5.6 million inhabitants. In no other country in the world is the sauna so deeply rooted in the culture.

History of the Sauna

The Finnish sauna has existed for at least 2,000 years. Originally, it was not just for bathing — children were born in the sauna, the sick were cared for, the deceased were washed, meat was smoked, and flax was dried. The sauna was the cleanest room in the house and a quasi-sacred place. The saying goes: "In the sauna, one behaves as in church."

Types of Sauna

  • Savusauna (Smoke Sauna) — The most original form: A stove without a chimney is heated for hours, the smoke dissipates, and the walls and stones retain the heat. The scent of smoke and wood is unique. The best sauna experience there is.
  • Wood-Heated Sauna — The standard in cottages and in the countryside. Slow, gentle heat (70–100°C). Löyly (steam) on the hot stones.
  • Electric Sauna — In city apartments and hotels. Functional, but without the charm of the wood sauna.
  • Tent Sauna & Mobile Sauna — For festivals, on the beach, or in the middle of the wilderness. Finland's latest trend.

Sauna Rituals

A typical sauna evening looks like this:

  1. Shower — Always wash first.
  2. First Round of Sauna — 10–20 minutes at 70–100°C. Löyly (water on the stones) as desired.
  3. Vihta/Vasta — Gently tapping the skin with a bundle of fresh birch twigs. Promotes circulation and smells wonderful. Fresh twigs in summer, soaked in winter.
  4. Cooling Off — Jump into the lake, into the ice hole, under the cold shower, or simply into the fresh air.
  5. Repeat — 2–4 rounds, drinking in between (beer, water, juice).
  6. Relax — After the last round: Sit on the terrace, look at nature, enjoy the silence.

Important: In Finland, the sauna is a place of equality and honesty. Nudity is normal in mixed family saunas, in public saunas it is separated by gender. No one stares, no one comments — the body does not matter, only well-being does.
