Northern Lights (Aurora Borealis)

The Aurora Borealis is Europe's most spectacular natural phenomenon — and Finnish Lapland is one of the best places in the world to see it. In the zone north of the Arctic Circle, Northern Lights are visible up to 200 nights per year.

When?

The Northern Lights season lasts from September to March. The best months are October, February, and March — when the nights are dark enough, but the weather is often clear. December and January have the longest darkness, but also often cloudiness. The activity follows an 11-year sunspot cycle — 2025/2026 is an excellent period (near the solar maximum).

Where?

  • Inari & Utsjoki — The northernmost, darkest, and with the highest chances. The "Aurora Zone" extends across all of northern Finland.
  • Saariselkä & Luosto — Popular resorts with glass igloos and Northern Lights alarm systems.
  • Muonio & Enontekiö — Fewer tourists, clearer skies.
  • Levi & Kittilä — Easily accessible (Kittilä airport), good infrastructure.
  • Rovaniemi — Also visible here, but the city's light pollution is a disturbance. Better: drive 30 minutes out.

Glass Igloos & Aurora Accommodations

Finland has perfected the concept of "sleeping under the Northern Lights":

  • Kakslauttanen Arctic Resort — The original glass igloos near Saariselkä. Heated glass, no fogging, unobstructed view of the sky. From 350€/night, booked months in advance.
  • Levin Iglut — Luxurious glass igloos in Levi with private bathroom and Northern Lights alarm. From 400€/night.
  • Arctic TreeHouse Hotel — Design treehouses near Rovaniemi with panoramic windows facing north. From 300€/night.
  • Star Arctic Hotel — Glass cabins on the Saariselkä fell with 360° views. From 350€/night.

Budget alternative: Rent a cabin (mökki) without light pollution (from 80€/night) and wait on the terrace. The Northern Lights app "My Aurora Forecast" alerts when activity is high.

💡 Tipp

The Northern Lights apps "My Aurora Forecast" and "Aurora" are indispensable. Set the alarm to KP index 3+. And: The best Northern Lights often appear between 10 PM and 2 AM. Bring patience — sometimes you wait for hours, and then the sky explodes.
