Mont Saint-Michel★★★
The Mont Saint-Michel is France's most photographed monument — and yet it takes everyone's breath away when seen for the first time. A Gothic abbey on an 80 m high granite rock, surrounded by the vast bay where the tides reach a tidal range of up to 15 meters — the largest in Europe. At high tide, the mount becomes an island, at low tide endless sand stretches to the horizon.
The abbey (founded in 966) is an architectural marvel: four centuries of building history, from the Romanesque nave to the Gothic choir to the "La Merveille" — a three-story monastic building from the 13th century with cloister, knights' hall, and refectory. The cloister, floating between sky and sea, is one of the most beautiful places in France.
The village at the foot of the abbey consists of a single steep lane (Grande Rue) full of souvenir shops, restaurants, and small museums. Touristy, yes — but the medieval atmosphere is real. La Mère Poulard (since 1888) serves its famous omelets, whipped up over an open flame — legendary but overpriced (€35 for an omelet).
The bay itself is an experience: At spring tide (especially in March and September), the water rushes in at the speed of a galloping horse. Guided mudflat walks through the bay (barefoot, with a guide) are unforgettable — you cross quicksand, wade through tidal channels, and approach the mount from the sea side. Duration: 2.5–4 hours, from €10 per person.
Abbey: €11 (adults), under 26 (EU) free. Daily 9:30 am–6 pm (May–Aug until 7 pm, nights in summer until midnight with light installation). Shuttle from the parking lot: free, every 10 min., alternatively 25 min. on foot over the causeway. Parking: €14.90/day.
💡 Tipp
Arrive either very early (9 am, before the buses) or late afternoon (from 4 pm, when the day-trippers are gone). Best of all: stay overnight on the mount itself — the Auberge Saint-Pierre (from €90/double room) is right on the Grande Rue. In the evening, when the tourists are gone and the abbey is illuminated, the mount is yours alone. Check the tide calendar in advance at ot-montsaintmichel.com!
