Puerto de Mogán — Little Venice
Puerto de Mogán is the most beautiful place in the south of Gran Canaria — and many would say: the whole island. The former fishing village at the southwestern end of the coast is often referred to as the "Little Venice of the Canaries" because of its canals and bridges. Unlike the hotel blocks of Playa del Inglés, Mogán has been developed carefully: low, white houses with colorful shutters, pergolas overgrown with Bougainvillea and Hibiscus, a small marina, and a sheltered sandy beach.
The Harbor
The Puerto (harbor) is the heart of the place: colorful fishing boats sway next to elegant yachts, fish restaurants line the quays, and in the evenings, freshly caught fish is grilled. This is also where excursion boats depart — for dolphin and whale watching, deep-sea fishing, or sailing trips along the coast. The ferry connection to Puerto Rico (15 minutes, from 8€) is a relaxed alternative to the bus.
The Beach
The Playa de Mogán is a small, crescent-shaped beach in a sheltered bay — ideal for families. The water is calm and clear, and the water temperature is often 1–2°C warmer than at the open beaches due to the sheltered location. Sunbeds and umbrellas: approx. 3€/piece.
Friday Market
Every Friday from 8 am–2 pm, Puerto de Mogán transforms into the most colorful market in the south: local fruits and vegetables, Canarian cheese, honey, handicrafts, leather goods, jewelry, and clothing. Come early (before 10 am) before the excursion buses arrive. The market is touristy, but the atmosphere is right — and the quality of local products is good.
Diving & Snorkeling
Mogán is one of the best diving spots in the Canaries. The clear, calm water of the bay offers excellent visibility (up to 30 meters). Highlights: the Yellow Submarine Wreck (an intentionally sunk submarine as an artificial reef), rays, barracudas, angel sharks, and colorful rocks. Several dive schools offer courses and excursions from approx. 45€ (introductory dive) to 250€ (PADI Open Water Course).
💡 Tipp
Come to the market on Friday morning, have breakfast in one of the harbor cafes, stroll through the flower-adorned alleys, and spend the afternoon on the beach. Puerto de Mogán is also the perfect starting point for a boat tour for dolphin and whale watching — the waters off the southwest coast are home to resident populations of bottlenose dolphins and pilot whales.
