Jasper National Park — Wild and Untamed★★★
If Banff is the polished jewel of the Rockies, then Jasper is the rough diamond. Canada's largest Rocky Mountain national park (10,878 km² — larger than all of Banff, Lake Louise, and Kootenay combined) is wilder, quieter, and less touristy than its more famous neighbor. Here, you still feel the real wilderness: Grizzly bears roam the valleys, elk graze on the meadows in front of the hotel, and the night sky is so dark as a Dark Sky Preserve that you can see the Milky Way with the naked eye.
The town of Jasper (population: ~5,000) is more relaxed and authentic than Banff — less tourist chic, more outdoor community. Everyone knows each other here, and the bartender is a hiking guide in the morning.
Top Highlights
- Maligne Lake: The largest natural mountain lake in the Rockies (22 km long!). The boat tour to Spirit Island (70 CAD) is legendary — the small, spruce-covered island against the backdrop of snow-capped peaks is one of the most photographed places in Canada.
- Maligne Canyon: A 50-meter deep gorge with waterfalls and bridges. In winter, you can walk on the frozen canyon floor (Ice Walk, guided, ~75 CAD) — one of the most unique winter experiences in the Rockies.
- Athabasca Falls: Not a particularly high waterfall (23 meters), but one of the most powerful — the sheer volume of water thundering through the narrow rock crevice is impressive. 5 minutes from the parking lot.
- Jasper SkyTram: The longest and highest aerial tramway in Canada at 2,277 meters. At the top: an easy hike to the summit of Whistlers Mountain (2,463 m) with panoramic views over the entire Jasper region. 56 CAD.
- Pyramid Lake: A picturesque lake 7 km from the town of Jasper. Rent canoes, stroll over a wooden bridge to the small Pyramid Island, enjoy the sunset.
💡 Tipp
Jasper is one of the best places in the world for stargazing. As a Dark Sky Preserve, the park has almost no light pollution. In October, the "Jasper Dark Sky Festival" takes place — with telescopes, lectures, and night hikes. Even without the festival: Just go out at night and look up.
