Parkgebühr: 26 USD + Fahrrad ~5 USD + Gorge-Guide ~15 USD

Hell's Gate is Kenya's most unusual national park — and the only one you can explore by bicycle or on foot. No predators (except rare leopards), but dramatic volcanic landscapes, steaming gorges, and vulture colonies on reddish-brown rock towers.

What to Expect

  • Cycling: Rent a bike at the entrance (Elsa Gate) (about 5 USD) and cycle along the main track through the park — past zebras, giraffes, buffaloes, and warthogs. The animals are accustomed to cyclists and hardly shy
  • Fischer's Tower: A 25-meter-high volcanic rock tower serving as a nesting site for hundreds of vultures — impressive!
  • Ol Njorowa Gorge: A narrow, steep gorge with steaming hot springs and geothermal activity. The hike through the gorge (2–3 hours, guide required) is spectacular
  • Climbing: Fischer's Tower and the rock walls are popular with climbers
  • Geothermal: Kenya's largest geothermal power plant (Olkaria) is located in the park — Africa's clean energy of the future

Fun Fact: The landscape of Hell's Gate inspired the setting in the Disney film “The Lion King"!

💡 Tipp

Arrive early in the morning (7:00 AM) before the sun becomes too strong. The cycling experience is best during the week — on weekends, many day-trippers from Nairobi visit.
