China-Laos Railway (New!)
The New Railway — a Game Changer
Since December 2021, the China-Laos Railway connects the Chinese border town of Boten with Vientiane — 422 km of high-speed track through 75 tunnels and over 167 bridges. What used to be a grueling 2-day bus ride now takes just under 4 hours.
Route and Stops
| Station | Distance from Vientiane | Travel Time |
|---|---|---|
| Vientiane | 0 km | — |
| Vang Vieng | 110 km | 1h 10min |
| Luang Prabang | 250 km | 2h |
| Luang Namtha | 380 km | 3h 20min |
| Boten (Chinese border) | 422 km | 3h 50min |
Practical Information
- Prices: Vientiane → Luang Prabang: approx. 200,000 LAK (8 EUR) 2nd class, approx. 300,000 LAK (12 EUR) 1st class
- Frequency: 2–4 trains per day in each direction
- Booking: At the station (Vientiane Station is 15 km outside!), via the LCR app, or through travel agencies
- Comfort: Modern, air-conditioned trains with wide seats, luggage racks, and dining cars
The railway has revolutionized travel planning in Laos: Vientiane → Vang Vieng in 1h 10min (instead of 4h by bus), Vientiane → Luang Prabang in 2h (instead of 10h by bus or 2-day Slow Boat). However, the Slow Boat remains the more emotional experience!
💡 Tipp
The train stations are often far from city centers (Vientiane: 15 km, Luang Prabang: 7 km). Plan for the Tuk-Tuk ride to the station (30,000–50,000 LAK). Book tickets online via the LCR app or the day before at the station — popular routes sell out quickly, especially in high season.
