Kuang Si Waterfalls★★★
Turquoise Natural Wonder
The Kuang Si Waterfalls (ນ້ຳຕົກຕາດກວາງຊີ) are the scenic highlight of Laos — and one of the most beautiful waterfalls in Southeast Asia. 30 km south of Luang Prabang, the water cascades over multiple limestone terraces into vivid turquoise natural pools, surrounded by tropical jungle.
The Site
- Lower Cascades: From the entrance, follow a path through the forest to the lower pools — perfect for swimming! The water is cool (about 20°C), crystal clear, and has its turquoise color from dissolved limestone (travertine).
- Main Waterfall: 60 m high, multi-tiered. At the end of the path, you reach the base of the main waterfall — impressive, especially in the rainy season (July–October) when the water roars down.
- Path to the Top: A steep, slippery path leads to the top edge of the waterfall. From above, you look over the cascades into the jungle. Sturdy shoes recommended!
- Bear Rescue Center: At the entrance, Free the Bears operates a rescue center for Asian black bears rescued from the illegal wildlife trade. Spacious enclosures, information boards. Included in the entrance fee.
Tips for Visiting
- When: Morning (9:00–10:00 AM) or afternoon (after 2:00 PM) — tour groups come at midday.
- Swimming: Bring swimwear! The pools are open for swimming. Changing rooms available.
- Best Time: November–March: clear, turquoise water. July–October: more water, but browner (rainy season). Both times have their charm.
