Isla Holbox — The Car-Free Island★★★

Isla Holbox (pronounced: "Hol-BOSCH") is the exact opposite of Cancún: a 42 km long, flat sand island in northern Yucatán, where there are no cars — only golf carts, bicycles, and barefoot walks on sandy streets.

Holbox is located in the Yum Balam Biosphere Reserve and is famous for its bioluminescence (glowing algae in the water, May–October), whale sharks (June–September), and an incredibly relaxed atmosphere. Street art everywhere, hammocks in the water, flamingos in the lagoon.

Highlights

  • Whale Shark Swimming: From June to September, whale sharks (up to 12 m long!) swim along the coast. Snorkeling tours from 2,500 MXN — a once-in-a-lifetime experience! The gentle giants are completely harmless.
  • Bioluminescence: At night, the water glows blue-green when you move in it. Best from May–October during the new moon. Tours from 500 MXN.
  • Punta Mosquito: Sandbank at the eastern end of the island with flamingos. Accessible on foot at low tide (1-hour hike).
  • Street Art: The colorful murals are everywhere in the village — Holbox is an open-air gallery.
  • Sunsets: The west side of the island offers the most spectacular sunsets on the Caribbean coast.

Getting There

From Cancún: Bus or rental car to Chiquilá (2.5h), then ferry to Holbox (25 min, 200 MXN). Ferries run every 30–60 minutes from 6:00 AM–9:00 PM.

💡 Tipp

Holbox is most beautiful in the off-season (May–June): whale sharks begin to appear, bioluminescence glows, and the island is pleasantly empty. In the high season (December–March), it gets crowded and expensive.
