Practical Tips for Coast & Delta

Getting There

From Bucharest to Constanța: 2.5 hours by car (A2 highway) or 2–4 hours by train (CFR). In summer, there are direct trains and buses from many Romanian cities. Constanța Airport (Mihail Kogălniceanu): Few international connections, mostly charters in summer.

From Bucharest to Tulcea (Danube Delta): 4–5 hours by car, alternatively train to Tulcea (5–6 hours). From Tulcea to the delta only by boat.

Best Travel Time

Coast: June to September (water temperature 22–26°C). July and August are peak season with crowded beaches and higher prices. June and September are ideal: warm enough for swimming, much quieter.

Danube Delta: May to October, ideal May–June (pelicans, water lilies, fewer mosquitoes) and September–October (bird migration, autumn colors, pleasant temperatures). July–August: Hot and mosquito-rich.

Accommodations

On the coast: Hotels in all price ranges (Mamaia: 40–150€/night in summer). In Vama Veche: Guesthouses and camping from 15€. Early booking for July/August recommended.

In the Danube Delta: Guesthouses in the fishing villages (25–50€/night including breakfast, often also dinner with fresh fish). Bookable through the delta administration (ARBDD) or local providers. Floating hotels (plutas) are a special experience.

Food

The cuisine of the region is characterized by fish and seafood: fish soup (ciorbă de pește), grilled pike-perch and carp, seafood risotto. In the Danube Delta, the fish borscht (ciorbă de pește à la delta) is the signature dish: sour, spicy, and fresh, cooked over an open fire. In Constanța, there is also excellent Turkish and Greek cuisine — a legacy of the multi-ethnic Dobruja.
