100,000 Lakes & Endless Forests
Sweden's landscape is shaped by the ice ages: When the glaciers melted 10,000 years ago, they left behind a land full of lakes (over 100,000, many without official names), moraines, archipelagos, and rock formations. The forests — primarily pine and spruce in the north, beech and oak in the south — cover 69% of the land area, making Sweden the most forested country in the EU.
The Major Landscape Zones
- Skåne (South): Flat agricultural land, beech forests, sandy beaches — reminiscent of Denmark. The "granary of Sweden" — here grow rapeseed, wheat, and sugar beets.
- Småland & Central Sweden: The "postcard Sweden": red wooden houses, lakes, dense coniferous forests, moose. The cultural treasure chest of the country.
- Dalarna: The cultural heart of Sweden — Midsummer celebrations, the famous Dala horses, the picturesque Lake Siljan (a meteorite crater!), the copper mine of Falun (UNESCO World Heritage).
- The Fells (Scandinavian Mountains): Along the Norwegian border — high mountain landscape with glaciers, tundra, and Kebnekaise (2,097 m, Sweden's highest mountain — although the south summit is shrinking due to the melting glacier and is now often lower than the north summit).
- Lapland: Arctic wilderness — birch forests, moors, reindeer herds, northern lights. Europe's last true wilderness.
