The Abisko National Park (77 km²) in the far north of Sweden, on the shore of Lake Torneträsk (Sweden's seventh-largest lake, 70 km long, up to 168 meters deep), is one of the best northern lights locations in the world. The reason has a name: the "Blue Hole of Abisko" — a microclimatic phenomenon where the surrounding mountains (the Scandinavian mountain range to the west and Lake Torneträsk) deflect the moist air and create a clear sky over Abisko, even when it is cloudy all around. Statistically, Abisko has the highest northern lights visibility of any place on Earth at this latitude.

★★★ Aurora Sky Station

The Aurora Sky Station on Mount Nuolja (900 m) is accessible by chairlift and offers the ultimate northern lights experience. The ascent alone is spectacular: In 20 minutes, you float above the birch forests, with the black Lake Torneträsk below and the starry sky above. Once at the top: A panoramic viewpoint with a 360-degree view, far from any light pollution, with a warm drink and an expert guide who explains the northern lights.

From November to March, evening Aurora Tours are offered:

TourDurationPriceNote
Aurora Sky Station Tour4–5 hours895 SEK (78 €)Chairlift + guide + warm drink. The classic tour.
Abisko Aurora Photo Tour3 hours1,295 SEK (113 €)With a photo guide who helps with camera settings. Tripod provided.
Aurora Wilderness CampOvernightfrom 2,500 SEK (218 €)Northern lights watching in a wilderness camp with campfire and tent/cabin.

Northern Lights Intensity: The strongest northern lights typically occur from 10 PM to 2 AM, but sightings are possible from 6 PM to 6 AM. The best time is December to March, with the statistical peak around the equinox (end of September, beginning of March). The intensity depends on the KP index (0–9, visible in Abisko from KP 3) and, of course, the cloud cover.

★★★ Kungsleden — The King's Trail

From Abisko starts Sweden's most famous long-distance hiking trail: the Kungsleden (King's Trail), 440 kilometers through the arctic high mountain landscape to Hemavan. The most popular stage is Abisko–Nikkaluokta (105 km, 4–6 days): past the Kebnekaise (Sweden's highest mountain, 2,097 m), over barren fells, through birch forests, and along rushing glacial rivers.

Along the way, there are STF mountain stations (mountain huts) spaced 10–20 kilometers apart — with sleeping places (bunk beds), kitchen (gas stove, cookware available), sometimes even a sauna and a small shop with basic groceries. Reservation in summer is strongly recommended — the huts are popular, especially in high season (July). Price: from 550 SEK (48 €) per night for STF members, 750 SEK for non-members. The best hiking time is mid-June to mid-September — before that, there is still snow, after that it gets cold and dark.

💡 Tipp

For northern lights in Abisko: The best time is December to March, the best hours between 9 PM and 1 AM. The app "My Aurora Forecast" shows the current aurora activity and the KP index. But: Northern lights are never guaranteed — plan at least 3 nights to maximize your chances. Patience and warm clothing are your best friends. Photography tip: Camera on tripod, ISO 1600–3200, aperture f/2.8, exposure time 8–15 seconds. The northern lights look BETTER in photos than with the naked eye — the camera captures colors that the eye does not perceive.
