Chinatown — Heart of Chinese Culture
Chinatown is the historical center of the Chinese community, which makes up about 75% of Singapore's population. What began in the 19th century as an overcrowded immigrant district is now a carefully restored heritage district with colorful shophouses, temples, teahouses, and some of the best hawker centers in the city.
Buddha Tooth Relic Temple
The Buddha Tooth Relic Temple (2007) is Chinatown's most magnificent building — a five-story temple in the Tang dynasty style, housing an alleged tooth relic of Buddha in a 420 kg stupa made of pure gold. The architecture is breathtaking: 320,000 Buddha figures, murals, a rooftop garden with a prayer wheel, and a museum with Buddhist art. Free, but wear appropriate clothing (shoulders and knees covered — shawls are provided at the entrance).
Maxwell Food Centre
The Maxwell Food Centre is Singapore's most famous hawker center — and for good reason. Over 100 stalls on a historic site in the heart of Chinatown. The stars:
- Tian Tian Hainanese Chicken Rice (Stall #10): The dish Anthony Bourdain called "the best chicken rice in the world." Tender poached chicken, aromatic rice, three sauces — 5 SGD. The line is legendary, but moves quickly.
- Zhen Zhen Porridge (Stall #54): Cantonese congee (rice porridge) with fresh seafood or pork — the perfect breakfast.
- Rojak, Popiah & Cockle (Stall #44): Singaporean classics — Rojak (fruit-vegetable salad with shrimp paste), Popiah (spring roll), and blood cockles.
💡 Tipp
Maxwell Food Centre is best visited for lunch (11 am–1 pm), when most stalls are open. Many close in the late afternoon or when the food is sold out — Tian Tian often closes before 3 pm. No tipping necessary, place dishes on the table (cleaners will clear them).
