Food & Nightlife
Budapest's gastro scene has rapidly developed in recent years. Alongside classic Hungarian cuisine, there are Michelin-starred restaurants, a creative street food scene, and the legendary ruin bars — Budapest's unique contribution to the world culture of nightlife.
Must-Try in Budapest
- Gulyásleves (Goulash Soup) — In Hungary, goulash is a soup, not a stew: hearty beef broth with chunks of meat, paprika, potatoes, and Csipetke (small dumplings). Available in the market hall or any Csárda for 3–5€.
- Pörkölt — What Germans call "goulash": braised beef or pork in a thick paprika sauce. Served with Nokedli (Hungarian spaetzle) or bread. The true national dish.
- Langos — Fried yeast dough flatbread, traditionally topped with sour cream (tejföl) and grated cheese. Best at market stalls or by Lake Balaton. 2–3€.
- Dobos Torte — Seven-layer chocolate sponge cake with caramel glaze — the queen of Hungarian confectioneries. Perfected at Café Gerbeaud.
- Kürtőskalács (Chimney Cake) — Sweet yeast dough, spiraled around a wooden cylinder and baked over coals, sprinkled with sugar, cinnamon, or nuts. The Hungarian dessert on the go. 2–4€.
Where to eat?
- Great Market Hall — For a quick, authentic lunch: Langos and Pörkölt on the upper floor.
- Hummus Bar / Bors GasztroBar — Legendary street food spots in the Jewish Quarter. Bors: soups and sandwiches in a tiny shop, always worth the queue.
- Menza — Modern Hungarian restaurant at Liszt Ferenc Square: classic dishes in contemporary design. Main courses 8–15€.
- Kőleves (Stone Garden) — In the Jewish Quarter: creative gastropub with Jewish-Hungarian cuisine.
Ruin Bars (Romkocsmák)
Budapest's most unique contribution to world culture: Abandoned buildings, factories, and residential houses in the Jewish Quarter, repurposed into Europe's most creative bars. Mismatched furniture, art on every wall, multiple floors, open-air courtyards.
- Szimpla Kert — The first and most famous ruin bar (since 2002). A whole block full of rooms, levels, and corners. Sundays: farmers' market in the courtyard.
- Instant-Fogas — The largest ruin bar: 18 rooms on multiple floors, each differently designed. Clubs, bars, rooftop terrace.
- Mazel Tov — Elegantly shabby, with excellent Israeli-Hungarian food under a glass roof filled with greenery.
- Csendes Vintage Bar — Quieter, artfully decorated, with the best craft beer selection.
